“Derby can certainly hang its hat with any of the top pop groups in the Northwest.”

- Portland Monthly

Bio

Portland, Oregon-based outfit Derby’s hometown alternative weekly the Willamette Week has called them “… one of those rare groups with a sound that's instantly familiar and yet 100 percent original. Hummable melodies and thick, cascading harmonies conjure up remnants of a long-gone era, while clever lyrics and polished songwriting place Derby among today's great young bands.” The publication also named the band one of the best new Portland bands in 2005.

This perfectly describes the immediately likeable power pop trio whose debut album This Is The New You (2005) received national and regional press accolades including The Big Takeover who asserted that “...they have the makings of a classic Posies/Sloan/Velvet Crush power-pop band. Excellent” and Seattle paper The Stranger who declared that the band’s live show creates “…a wall of rock that's damn near hypnotic.” That album, which was self produced and recorded in the band’s home studio put Derby on top ten lists around the country. Their vocally-driven, vintage-tinged pop-rock received comparisons to the Shins, Sloan and Brendan Benson. Derby regularly sold-out shows in their hometown, and played to capacity crowds at Spaceland in L.A. with the 88, and the Mercury Lounge in New York City with the Robbers on High Street. Their highly acclaimed slots at South by Southwest, Music Fest NW and the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle, WA, were highlights of the festivals, fueled by rumors of lonely bartenders whose customers forgot about refills during Derby’s mesmerizing sets. Derby also shared the stage with the Decemberists, Cake, Magic Numbers, British Sea Power, the Posies, the Minus Five, Robyn Hitchcock, Stars of Track & Field, Violent Femmes, Imperial Teen, Badly Drawn Boy, to name a few.

Taking time to absorb all of the positives and focus on writing new material brought the band to hole themselves up in the home studio once more in early 2007. Constant touring had brought the band closer, enabling them to write harmonies that meld one band member into another, hand claps that emphasize their organic energy, and driving guitars that propel the band into its energetic future. Posters may fade, but Derby’s vibrancy remains, from the incredible artwork done by keyboardist/vocalist David Gulick to the indelible melodies contained within the Posters Fade album.

The quality of the home recording is truly outstanding and the band are self-proclaimed studio nerds who actually love performing live. Expect to see them on tour throughout 2008. Don’t be surprised if you wind up hearing songs crop up in film or television, as their previous work has been placed in the ABC TV shows What About Brian, Men in Trees, Eli Stone, and Notes from the Underbelly.
